About Mediation

Mediation is a process that allows people to discuss their conflict, with the help of a neutral third party, with the resolution of the conflict being the goal. Conflict is normal and even healthy, when the conflict is able to be resolved. What isn’t healthy, especially for your children, is carrying unresolved conflict with you through life.

Mediation is a voluntary process. I am your neutral third party, and I will meet with each of you individually first, in order to determine how I can best help you when you are together. Each mediation is different, as each scenario is different. There is opportunity to learn to communicate more effectively and to discuss all issues, including parenting plans, support and property issues.

As your mediator, I am able to give you “neutral information” during a joint session, however I cannot provide both parties with legal advice. Your lawyers will be involved to advise you of your rights and obligations and to create your separation agreement at the end. The goal is that the terms agreed to during the mediation will be incorporated into your separation agreement, thereby saving you time, money and harmful emotional energy. On rare occasions, we will invite lawyers to join the mediation, if it appears that having them present will assist in the resolution.

The entire mediation process will be a closed process, meaning it’s your safe place to discuss and explore ideas. It’s your chance to be vulnerable; in disclosing why something is important, we can get to the crux of the issue. The discussion can then open up to explore options to achieve what is important to both.

Mediation is a method which can allow two people to craft the details of their own lives. It’s a way in which you may move forward in life, while honouring your life up until this point.
